Screening for Plagiarism

Jurnal Keperawatan Tropis Papua (JKTP) is committed to publishing only original work. The journal applies a systematic policy of screening all submitted manuscripts for plagiarism, self-plagiarism, and duplicate publication. This policy is in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and applies to all manuscripts at every stage of the editorial process.

1. SCREENING TOOL AND THRESHOLD

All submitted manuscripts are screened using Turnitin prior to peer review. The maximum accepted similarity index is 20%. Manuscripts exceeding this threshold will be returned to authors for revision before the editorial process proceeds. Authors are strongly encouraged to screen their manuscripts using Turnitin or an equivalent tool prior to submission.

The similarity index is interpreted in context. Editors review the Turnitin report to assess the nature and source of similarities. High similarity derived from properly cited direct quotations, reference lists, or standard methodological terminology may be treated differently from similarity arising from uncited text. The editors' assessment is final.

2. DEFINITION OF PLAGIARISM AND RELATED MISCONDUCT

Plagiarism is defined as the use of another person's words, ideas, data, figures, or other intellectual output without proper attribution, regardless of whether the source is published or unpublished. This includes verbatim copying, close paraphrasing, and the misappropriation of ideas. All forms of plagiarism are prohibited.

Self-plagiarism is the republication of an author's own previously published material—whether in whole or in substantial part—without appropriate disclosure and citation of the original source. This includes the submission of a manuscript that substantially overlaps with a previously published article by the same author(s).

Duplicate submission is the submission of the same manuscript, or a manuscript with substantial overlap, to more than one journal simultaneously. JKTP does not accept manuscripts that are under consideration elsewhere at the time of submission.

Salami publication is the artificial fragmentation of a single study into multiple publications that could reasonably have been presented as one article. This practice is prohibited.

3. CONSEQUENCES OF DETECTED MISCONDUCT

Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism, self-plagiarism, duplicate content, or other forms of publication misconduct will be handled in accordance with COPE guidelines. Depending on the severity of the case, the following actions may be taken:

  • Before publication: immediate rejection of the manuscript; notification of the authors' institution, where appropriate; prohibition on future submissions from the involved authors for a defined period
  • After publication: issuance of a retraction notice; notification of the authors' institution; cooperation with any formal investigation by the relevant institution or body

Retracted articles will be clearly marked as such and will remain accessible in the journal's archive to preserve the integrity of the scholarly record.

4. AUTHORS' RESPONSIBILITIES

By submitting a manuscript to JKTP, authors affirm that the work is original, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration by another journal. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all sources cited in the manuscript are properly referenced and that any previously published material included in the manuscript—including their own—is clearly identified and cited.

Authors are required to upload a Statement of Originality, signed by all authors, as part of the submission process. The Statement of Originality form is available at Statement of Originality.
